Never Talk to the Cops
Video Transcribed:
Hey, this is Oklahoma Attorney, Brian Jackson. Never talk to the cops. I say this a lot and I hate to beat a dead horse but here’s another good reason not to talk to law enforcement if they come up and want to question you, or they want to do an interview. They’ll love to use the word interview because it sounds nicer than interrogation but the two are the same thing.
Cops are allowed to legally lie to you and mislead you to get you to incriminate yourself and this is a common tactic that cops will use, is they’ll try to be your friend and a lot they’ll try to lead you to believe that they really don’t think you did anything wrong and they just want to clear up a misunderstanding, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Don’t fall for that.
They can legally lie to you. They can legally deceive you and you open your mouth and say anything, it’s a hundred percent admissible. As long as they’ve read you that Miranda warning, it’s a hundred percent admissible and if you’re not in custody, they don’t even have to do that.
So the long and short of it is, this is another really good reason guys, the best protection you have is to shut your mouth and don’t assume just because they telling you that they’re not interested in trying to prosecute you, that they’re not interested in trying to prosecute you, and that you’re not potentially subject to arrest if you go off and say something stupid.
So again, don’t talk to the cops, guys. Don’t ever talk to the cops and if you find yourself approached by an officer who you didn’t call, then I would very strongly encourage you to consult an Oklahoma Criminal Defense Attorney and go to makelaweasy.com
