Consult a Traffic Ticket Attorney When Needed
Video Transcribed: What traffic offense costs the most points on your driver’s license in Oklahoma? I’m Tulsa Traffic Ticket Attorney, James Wirth. And we’re talking about driver’s license points, particularly for this video, what costs the most points on your license? So what is the point system? Just a little bit of background there.
The Oklahoma Department of public safety, which regulates driver’s licenses has a point system. If you are convicted of a traffic offense, the court clerk of that court sends notice of that conviction to the Department of Public Safety, and they put points on your license.
And that is your driving record that is received by insurance companies when they make that request. More points on your license, higher insurance costs, or perhaps you can’t get insurance. But also if you get too many points, up to 10 points within a five-year period, you lose your license.
So there are 63 different types of traffic offenses that are listed in the appendix that has a point assigned to it by the Department of Public Safety. It’s either one, two, three, or four points. So what are the offenses that have the most points? Well, a couple that isn’t, DUI, failing to stop for a school bus.
Those two actually don’t have any points. Those are automatic suspensions of your driver’s license if you’re convicted. A couple of other ones, contest racing or careless driving or driving in the wrong direction, those you’d think would be a lot of points, they’re actually just two points. Although contest racing could qualify as either one of the ones that are the maximum points.
So what are the offenses that are the maximum points? The highest amount of points that you have for a single offense, it’s four points each, and there are two of them, reckless driving and speeding 41 or more miles per hour over the speed limit.
Either conviction on either one of those is four points on your license. That’s reported to insurance companies when they make that request. So you definitely want to avoid getting convictions on those. And those are the two that have the most points.
