You Can Lawyer up before Speaking to the Police
Video Transcribed: Should I speak with the police? Hi, my name is Jason Sorenson. I’m an attorney in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and today we’re going to be talking about whether or not you should answer the police’s questions when they start questioning you.
Well, in a lot of cases, it’s actually against your interest to answer questions from the police. A lot of times you’re being investigated and you don’t even know it. So in most cases, it’s in your best interest to hire an attorney beforehand, before you start speaking with the police.
In some cases, it can be okay to speak with them if you limit what you’re speaking to them about. So if they start questioning you about a matter, you can make a simple statement and then let them know that you are willing to comply with them and that you will answer all of their questions at a later date once you have an attorney.
Then refuse to answer any of their questions, because you do have a right to an attorney and anything you say can and will be held against you.
So like I said, in most cases, it is in your best interest to have an attorney to represent you and have your best interests in mind. So if you do get questioned, keep those things in mind.
