Understanding Child Support Obligations and Enforcement
Hello, this is Tulsa family law attorney Brian Carter with the Wirth Law Office. In this video, I’m going to talk about the tools available when child support is owed.
Methods of Enforcing Child Support Payments
First, there is income withholding, where the amount owed can be taken directly from the paycheck of the parent who owes support. Liens can also be placed on property to ensure payment. In addition, tax returns may be intercepted to cover child support obligations.
If nonpayment becomes persistent, the court can hold the parent in contempt, which may result in fines or even jail time. Licenses can also be suspended—including driver’s licenses, professional licenses, and even recreational licenses such as hunting and fishing—until the obligation is met.
