Divorces Depends on Cooperation
Video Transcript: How long does a divorce take in Oklahoma? Hi, my name is Jason Sorenson. I’m an attorney in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Wirth Law Office, and today we’re going to be talking about how long divorces take in Oklahoma.
So, that timeframe really varies from one situation to another. Some divorces are going to be a lot more simple than others. But the most simple divorce case, ones where parties are in agreement, parties don’t have marital assets to divide and the parties don’t have children, a divorce like that can actually be granted 10 days after the petition is filed. So something like that can move very quickly. But if you have children involved, there is a 90 day waiting period. So once you get the children involved, it does take a little longer. And then if there are any disputes as far as the division of property or the custody of the minor children, that’s where things can get really complicated and take longer periods of time.
Even up to years in some circumstances, where the parties really have a hard time agreeing on how these things should be decided, how the properties should be divided, how often the kids should be with one parent or the other, who should have custody. Those types of things really slow the process down and complicate things, but this is something that parties can try filing on their own. However, divorces can be complex and if you have an attorney to help you with the divorce case, it really makes the process a lot easier because then you have somebody who’s experienced and knows how to handle these things. And not only does it make it easier for you, but it also speeds the process up.
So if you are looking to speed the process up and get the divorce finalized as quickly as possible, a lot of times it’s in your best interest to have an attorney on your side to not only speed it up, but also to make sure you’re getting what you want out of that divorce. But this is just basic information.
